From the LTTE in this weeks Citizen:
Thank you Cathy Hostman and Kelley Banaszewski for your interest in the Keller ISD parking lot planned just north of Keller High School across Johnson Road.
The District has apparently been less than successful in properly communicating the rationale behind this project.
We currently stage 120 buses out of our facility located at the corner of Alta Vista and Keller Hicks in Fort Worth. This is an intersection that is just one lane in either direction and will soon be under construction due to the Fort Worth extension of Beach that will soon intersect with and become part of Alta Vista going north of Keller Hicks.
We currently encounter delays getting the buses past the lights and railroad tracks at State Highway 377 so that we can complete our routes that are east of 377. In light of these issues we began looking for a location to park buses to the east of Highway 377.
If and when this parking lot is built, the District will save $250,000 annually due to reduced route length, less drive time, and less fuel. The parking lot will pay for itself in just over 4 years. Faced with these facts we felt that it would be imprudent Not to build the parking lot.
Incidentally the funds used for this project are coming from Capital Improvement funds and not from the general operating funds of the District, which means that spending, or not spending, these particular dollars will not impact the budget distress we are experiencing in the General Fund.
