Three Cheers for Vicki Truitt

The Star-Telegram had a pretty good article today about Red Light Cameras, and our own Vicki Truitt was quoted:

State Rep. Vicki Truitt, R-Keller, said in a letter to Mauz that she hopes the red-light cameras eventually disappear from Texas cities. Many legislators approved the cameras in 2003, when language making them legal was inserted into a bill.

“My feeling is, if the use of these devices is no longer lucrative for the cities, perhaps they will be open to the facts about the impact of these cameras,” Truitt wrote to Mauz in October 2007. “However, as long as Texas cities are uniformly defending their use, these cameras will be very difficult to ban.”

As most readers know, I am not a fan of our State Representitive and her Nanny State positions, but here is at least one item that I can cheer her for.

I am also glad to see her position on these cameras. It wasn’t mentioned in the article, but I believe the last legislature passed a bill to sunset red light cameras in September 2009, unless they vote to reinstate them this year.

I hope that is still on track to happen. I am sure the cities that have them and red light camera companies will be throwing a lot of lobbying money at the legislature to get them to change their minds.

Fox 4 had a story about the cameras in Ft Worth recently.
